The Sensors Several meteorological sensors were mounted on a telescoping lift located on 500 South between 200 and 300 East. This lift was commonly called the "Blue Goose". DPG and UK/DERA also fielded separate 3-D sonic anemometers at the top of the Blue Goose. LLNL sensors include two 2-D sonic anemometers, four ambient temperature probes, a 1-D sonic with a thermocouple, a net radiometer, and a krypton hygrometer. The Data The sensors were sampled continuously and averaged every 10 minutes. Below is a table of the column heading, full definition, and units. Label Meaning units Time Date and time in MST WS1 Wind speed at 7.3 m m/s WD1 Wind direction at 7.3 m degrees ST1 Sigma theta at 7.3 m degrees SU1 Sigma U at 7.3 m m/s WS2 Wind speed at 11 m m/s WD2 Wind direction at 11 m degrees ST2 Sigma theta at 11 m degrees SU2 Sigma U at 11 m m/s T1 Do not use T2 Air temperature at 7.8 m C T3 Air temperature at 12.5 m C T4 Air temperature at 18.0 m C Wbar Vertical wind m/s Tbar Thermocouple temperature C SigW Sigma vertical wind m/s SigT Sigma T C wT Covariance w'T' m/s*C NetRad Net radiation at 12 m w/m2 H Sensible heat flux at 11 m w/m2 LE Latent heat at 11 m w/m2 The first 4 parameters (WS1, WD1, ST1, SU1) were measured using the lower 2-D sonic anemometer. The second four (WS2, WD2, ST2, SU2) were measured using the upper sonic. The three temperatures were measured with thermistors mounted inside self-aspirated shields. The next five parameters (Wbar, Tbar, SigW, SigT, wT) were measured by the vertical sonic. Wbar is the average vertical wind, which should be zero if the sonic were perfectly aligned perpendicular to the wind. Tbar is the average temperature as measured by the thermocouple. SigW and SigT are the standard deviation of the vertical wind and temperature measurements. The covariance of the vertical wind and temperature is presented as wT. The net radiometer was mounted at about 12 m. The sensible heat flux, H, is computed from wT. The latent heat flux is measured by the krypton hygrometer, a high-speed water vapor sensor. Ground heat flux is not measured and probably close to zero.
