Urban Meteorology

Wind climatology analysis shows a very definite diurnal wind pattern in Salt Lake City. The winds through downtown are typically from the NW during the day. The nighttime winds are predominately from the SE near the downtown study area. Releasing tracer between midnight and 8 AM (before the morning transition period) will allow tracer material to advect across a sampling grid to the NW of the downtown release location. Investigating dispersion in near steady winds allows the tracer sampling resources to be consolidated in a downwind sector rather than surrounding the release location with samplers (at a much coarser resolution) in order to capture any meteorological conditions.
